What meals can I make to freeze for my child?

Your young baby is just discovering the wonder of food. For 6 mths your baby has watched you and those around you eating. Your baby has seen you eat many foods, watched you with your cutlery and your crockery. Your baby may have even seen you make meals from peering over and out of the baby sling. Now finally it is their turn to experience the wonder of food!

We suggest you do not add any salt, sugar or butter to any foods. You may cringe, you may add these to your foods however your young baby is tasting food for the first time and it is preferable that they develop their own taste of the foods without your preferences. Besides salt, sugar & butter are better left out of your baby’s delicate & developing digestive system.

To start baby off with solids, just try one food at a time, for a few days. Then if there are any allergies or reactions, you will know exactly which food caused them. Most babies love pumpkin, so perhaps try that one first; however there are no rules so start with whatever suits you and your family.

Once you know there are no reactions to a food, e.g. pumpkin, you can add another vegetable and so on and so on eventually building up to an ensemble of all the vegetables. If you have 6 Tiny Tastebuds Jars perhaps make 3 batches of pumpkin & 3 batches of pumpkin & potato. If you have more make the next 2 as well.

Another essential basic is baby cereal. Many have given the humble baby cereal a bad rap, however it certainly doesnt have to be nor should it be boring and tasteless! A little added fruit can make all the difference! Please see our recommended recipe at the bottom of the page. My son still loves it and he is now 2yrs old!

Enjoy! Not only will you save money, but time during your busy week. Plus you are giving your little one the best start in life with real food, no additives or thickeners and your Tiny Tastebuds Jars ensure there are definitely NO chemicals leaching into your yummy homemade food!

MASHED PUMPKIN - Makes 50mls (1 baby serve)

(for babies 6 mths & over)

  • 100 - 150 grams/ half a cup of cubed pumpkin (Kent/Jap is ideal)

Remove skin & cut pumpkin into 2 cm cubes. Steam or boil (minimal water) over gentle heat for 5-7 minutes. Test pumpkin by piecing with a knife or fork which should be easily removed. Try not to overcook as the pumpkin will lose all its nutrients.

Remove from heat & place in glass or ceramic bowl (in the interests of your baby's health please try not to use any plastic). Add 2-4 tablespoons of liquid (breast milk, water, steaming juice). Mash with fork until thick pourable consistency (ensure all lumps are mashed thoroughly). Blending in unnecessary, as some texture is great for your baby’s’ development; however as the parent it is your personal choice.

Place in Tiny Tastebuds Jar. Allow to cool slightly, cover with lid. Write contents & date on magnetic lid label & place in freezer for no longer than one month. Any left over can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. When serving don’t forget to serve with a stainless steel spoon!

  • 100 - 150 grams/ half a cup of cubed pumpkin & potato

Remove from heat & place in glass or ceramic bowl (in the interests of your baby's health please try not to use any plastic). Place spinach in steamer/pot just until the spinach leaves are limp (under a minute), we do not want the spinach to change to a dull green. Place cooked spinach in a separate bowl. Cut finely into tiny pieces with a knife and fork; keep moving bowl angles to cut all spinach. Add spinach (including any juices in spinach bowl) to pumpkin & potatoes.

FRUIT RICE CEREAL - Makes 50mls (1 baby serve)

(for babies 6 mths & over)

  • 1 heaped dessert spoon of rice cereal ("Bellamys" organic baby rice cereal in Coles is great)
  • 1/2 ripened room temperature banana
  • 1 ripened & washed room temperature strawberry (do not add this until the 4th day for the allergy testing method, as mentioned in the introduction)
  • 40mls breastmilk/formula or water ("Pure" organic full cream milk in coles is great from 12mths of age)

Using a fork, mash the strawberry on a small plate and place into a small glass or ceramic mixing bowl. Mash banana and add to bowl. Add the dry cereal mix to the bowl and lastly the breastmilk/formula or water. Mix with a fork beat (as you would an egg), regularly move the bowl and scrape down the sides until all mixed well.

You may wish to double this receipe and serve as an after dinner treat (great belly filler for a good sleep). If doubling, place extra in Tiny Tastebuds jar and pop into the fridge for later. Serve at room temperature. You can get the cereal to room temperature by either standing the jar in some hot water whilst your child has their dinner, or take the jar out of the fridge and let stand, one hour prior to serving.

When serving don't forget to serve with a stainless steel spoon!
